2011 Kiely Cup Field is Set!!

Canterbury Golf Club

Kiely Cup

ARCHBISHOP HOBAN HIGH SCHOOL
AVON LAKE HIGH SCHOOL
CANTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL‪
CUYAHOGA VALLEY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
DELAWARE-BUCKEYE VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
FINDLAY LIBERTY-BENTON HIGH SCHOOL
GILMOUR ACADEMY
HUDSON HIGH SCHOOL MEDINA HIGH SCHOOL
ST. EDWARD HIGH SCHOOL
ST. IGNATIUS HIGH SCHOOL
STOW-MUNROE FALLS HIGH SCHOOL
SUGARCREEK GARAWAY HIGH SCHOOL
UNIVERSITY SCHOOL
WALSH JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL

The field for the 7th Annual Canterbury Kiely Cup, scheduled for
Monday, September 12, 2011, is set.

I seem to say this every year, “Next year’s invitees far and away represent the strongest teams ever assembled.” This holds true again. Ten of the fifteen squads qualified for STATE in Columbus this year and return equally experienced teams in 2011. In addition, we invited an excellent cross-section of public- private, Division I – II & III secondary schools.

Happily, four new schools get a chance to play our famed links for the fist time: Canton Central Catholic, Delaware-Buckeye Valley, Findlay Liberty-Benton and Sugarcreek Garaway (2007 & 2008 D-III State Champions). If 2011 is anything like this year; we’re in for a treat. University School’s 2009 tournament record of 308 lasted exactly twelve months. Joe Denton’s Walsh Jesuit team really came together in 2010 with a record breaking 302! (72-73-76-81) behind Tyler McHugh and freshman Chase Johnson’s 73. Co-medalists were crowned for the third time in our short six-year history. Tyler McHugh and 2010 Division-III State Champion, Alex Andrews of Gilmour Academy, returned scorecards at even par 72!

Happy Holidays!
Craig Fraser, Chairman

What Are You Working On?

I spent part of yesterday with Davis Love and Hunter Mahan while they were doing a clinic for The Evans Scholars Program at the Memorial Tournament. When asked, "what do you work on when your swing seems off?"

His answer: "Just what I do all the time since I was 5 years old - fundamentals: alignment, grip, grip pressure, posture - the same stuff we work on daily" The same old stuff and just keep repeating. "Do all the little things over and over and you will get better".

My recommendation: Follow this advice and spend more time working on your short game since you need to get it up and down when your swing is off!

Just got back. . . What's the Buzz?

Just returned from FL (was invited to play in the Honda Pro-Am). Here is the latest scoop:
Honda is offering Zero % down on leases - trying to stimulate sales. . . frankly most professionals could care less when Tiger returns. . . most people think the "Being John Daly" show on the Golf Channel is ridiculous. . . Canterbury is thought of as one of the finest conditioned best "classic" courses in the country (saw Jack Nicklaus at dinner on Tuesday night and he agreed). . . Golfweek has moved us down to 77 (from 95) on the list of Best Classic Courses. . . have some great ideas to entice new members to join Canterbury and will work tirelessly to make that happen! It was a fun three days. . . by the way, very proud that I played 3 over par for three rounds in cold, windy conditions after shoveling snow for the past two months!

Obviously happy to see Teri and Cooper but can't wait for the snow to be gone so we can get to playing golf!

Oh by the way. . . we just received some very cool Nike Men's Clothing - great colors!

Sunday

Ricky Fowler - Very Cool!

First year, PGA Tour Player Ricky Fowler, made a big spash this weekend and nearly won his first Professional tournament losing by one stroke today in Phoenix. He is a snapshot of the future - and very cool in his Puma clothing from head to toe!

We have Puma coming this season as one of our new hot lines - expect delivery to the Golf Shop in May! Tell all your young friends - get your "painters caps" from the Golf Shop at Canterbury!

By the way - with kids like Fowler, Kim, Villegas, Mahan, Glover, and so many budding young stars on the scene - I think the Tour is just fine for excitement while Tiger is on the bench!

Tuesday

Nike - Hottest New Equipment for 2010

Nike Golf will lead the way this season with the hottest new golf equipment. The introduction of the Victory Red Driver and The Method Putter. Over twenty wins on tours worldwide in 2009 including Cink at the British Open and Glover at the US Open. The Golf Shop will have every component offered by Nike through our Nike Fitting Cart and we now have the Nike Computer Launch Monitor for all our fittings. Very cool stuff!! This is the best driver I have ever used in my thirty five years as a golf professional.
Check out The Method Putter and VR Driver with some very cool videos at:
